Chipmunk programs designed to eliminate chipmunks before they get out of control.
Why Do I Have Chipmunks?
Chipmunks are common across all of Chicagoland, but their populations are denser in neighborhoods that border forested areas or where neighbors feed birds. Chipmunks are attracted to the spilled seed from bird feeders, and when they have bird seed to eat, their populations grow. The towns with the greatest number of chipmunk issues are Barrington, Inverness, Wauconda, Deerfield, Northbrook, Riverwoods, and Glen Ellyn.
When chipmunks invade your yard, their burrows cause pavers, patios, and walkways to collapse. ABC Wildlife’s biologists expertly remove chipmunks to keep chipmunk populations from getting out of control.
They’re looking for shelter. They’re looking for warmth. They’re looking at your home, no matter where you live. Find out why, and what we can all do to coexist.

Chipmunks (sometimes also called ground squirrels) are easy to identify due to their small size and striped markings. The eastern chipmunk and the thirteen-lined ground squirrel are native throughout Illinois. The eastern chipmunk is approximately 8-12 inches in length and weighs between 3 and 5 ounces. The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is much larger. They are slender, weighing about 9 ounces, with large eyes and small ears.
Both eastern chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels are burrowing rodents who love to dig underground tunnels and nests. They are omnivores, which means they eat a variety of food including seeds, nuts, roots, fungi, grass, shoots, worms, and bird eggs. They are also quite fond of vegetables, flower bulbs, and flower buds. If your garden is suffering from animal damage, chipmunks may be the culprit!
Chipmunks are common throughout all of the U.S., including Northern Illinois. They are fond of both woodlands and fields near woods, but it is not unusual to find them in suburban and rural neighborhoods. Chipmunks will invade a property by burrowing under structures where they feel covered and safe. Both eastern chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels dig burrows in late autumn and hibernate during the winter.
Chipmunks’ digging habits often blemish manicured lawns, vegetable and flower gardens, and other landscaped areas. This can create issues that are difficult to treat. If you are experiencing chipmunks in your home or business, chances are that they have already established multiple points of entry. Burrow entrances are usually smaller than three inches in diameter and are about the size of a golf ball.
It is important to act quickly once a chipmunk problem is identified. If the population of chipmunks in a home increases, the amount of damage they can create increases as well. Ignoring it can result in costly repercussions. By burrowing under stairs, patios, driveways, foundations or retaining walls, they can cause both the ground and concrete to collapse.
Chipmunk Health Concerns
Chipmunks do not present any significant health or safety concerns for humans and pets. Nevertheless, it is recommended you stay away from all wild animals to prevent potential issues from arising.
