Great Teamwork

“I really appreciated the collaboration amongst the different workers and the time each worker put into educating me about wildlife management. Today, Kenny and Rolandus came out and it was refreshing to know they read the notes of the other workers and knew exactly what the next steps would be. Great teamwork.”

Identify Your Stinging Insect

Honey bees, Yellowjacket wasps, Bald-faced hornets, Carpenter bees, Bumble bees, and Polistes wasps are the species of stinging insects that most frequently need to be removed from people’s homes in Illinois. Call today to have our expert beekeepers and technicians come to your home to solve your stinging insect problem.

  • Honey bees are ecologically important. Our team of beekeepers and biologists relocates Honey bee colonies alive and without the use of pesticides.
  • Yellowjacket wasps usually make their nest in a hole on the outside of your home, or in the ground, but they can also build gray paper nests inside your attic or shed.
  • Bald-faced hornets are aggressive, large, black and white colored hornets that build gray paper nests.
  • Carpenter bees bore holes in wood and hover in the air.
  • Bumble bees usually live in a hole in the ground.
  • Polistes wasps are also called Umbrella wasps, and they build nests under the eaves and in deck railings. They also nest under the grill cover and beneath lawn chairs and other outdoor furniture. Their legs dangle below their bodies when they fly, which makes them easy to identify.

What Happens When There are Bees, Wasps, or Hornets on My Home?

Bees, wasps, and hornets have an important role to play in nature, so when they’re just flying through the air or visiting flowers, staying out of their way is the best plan. Stinging insects become a problem when they’re nesting on your home or in your yard. Bees, wasps, and hornets can become very aggressive when defending their nests, so having their nests removed and applying an environmentally-friendly treatment that prevents them from rebuilding their nest on your home is the best way to protect your home and family.

Why Don’t Bee, Wasp, and Hornet Products That I Buy at the Store Solve My Bee, Wasp, and Hornet Problem?

Bee, wasp, and hornet products sold at stores are less effective than the professional-grade products we apply. Many consumer-grade products are messy, smelly and oil based. They can stain siding and they don’t solve your problem. Professional-grade products and methods not only remove the nest, but they have residual activity to prevent new bee, hornet and wasp nests from forming.

Treating a bee, wasp or hornet nest with DIY solutions can be extremely dangerous. When their nests are approached, stinging insects will work together to sting repeatedly which can result in hospitalization or death. Our technicians and beekeepers are specially trained and use special protective equipment to make sure that your stinging insect problem is resolved quickly and safely.

Why Do I Have Bees, Wasps, and Hornets?

Bees and wasps look for cracks, holes, and shelter from the rain to build their nests, so your home’s roof, soffits, overhangs, vents, and siding are ideal. Untreated surfaces welcome stinging insects, but there are environmentally-friendly treatments that can be applied to cracks, crevices and beneath eaves that keep stinging insects out and prevent them from building their nests.

Contact our pest experts today to prevent stinging insects from building nests and to get rid of bee, wasp, and hornet nests on your home or property quickly.

Identifying Bees, Wasps, & Hornets

Although related to each other, bees and wasps are easy to distinguish from one another. Most wasps have a narrow middle section that tapers as the front section of the abdomen narrows to meet the middle section or thorax. Bees, on the other hand, do not have this narrow section. Hornets are a type of wasp and are one of the most aggressive stinging insects.

Both bees and wasps are highly beneficial to the environment. In addition to producing millions of pounds of honey each year, honey bees also act as pollinators for other plants, many of which are used as food in the United States. In fact, honey bees pollinate nearly half the fruit and vegetable crops in the United States. Wasps, while not pollinators, contribute by killing and eating millions of pest insects that would otherwise harm crops.

Some bee and wasp species are solitary in nature while others are social. Solitary bees and wasps present little danger to humans, but social species can pose a much greater danger and should be handled by professionals.

Habitat of Bees, Wasps, & Hornets

Bees and wasps are common throughout the United States, including Northern Illinois. Bee and wasp nesting locations vary depending on species and available resources. Many will nest in hollowed out tree cavities, holes in the ground, under overhanging eaves of houses, or under patio umbrellas. Wasps, in particular, prefer to build nests in sunny spots in and around homes.

For 40 years, ABC Wildlife has helped homeowners and commercial clients with bee, wasp, and hornet problems across Chicagoland and Northern Illinois.

Damage Caused by Bees, Wasps, & Hornets

Bees and wasps can damage homes by nesting inside walls and attics. Carpenter bees are of particular concern. Similar to carpenter ants and termites, carpenter bees burrow into wood to create tunnels where they nest, compromising the strength of the wood.  Yellow jackets and honey bees can also cause thousands of dollars in structural damage by building their homes inside of walls.  They can also make their way inside through small gaps in your home, increasing the chances of being stung.

Health Concerns Related to Bees, Wasps & Hornets

The greatest health concern related to bees and wasps is their sting. Bee and wasp stings cause between 50 and 100 deaths each year. Approximately 1% of the population is allergic to bee and wasp venom. Species of bees and wasps that are social are far more likely to be aggressive in defending their territory. Yellow jackets and bald faced hornets present the greatest risk of being stung.

Yellow jackets are a cavity-nesting species that often create nests in homes between drywall and the exterior walls of a home.  They use the organic material in the drywall to create their nests, frequently breaking through the wall and coming into the home.  If you think you may be dealing with a yellow jacket problem and see a wet spot on your wall, DO NOT touch it.

Bald faced hornets build white nests that look like paper mache balls with a hole in the bottom.  They prefer high tree branches and are very aggressive in defending their territory.  If you think you have either of these two very dangerous species on your property, call the professionals at ABC humane Wildlife to eliminate the problem.
