Damage Caused by Bats
Bats can be found in attics year-round. Most species of bats found in Illinois will migrate to warmer climates in the winter, but some remain and seek out a warmer habitat that allows them to hibernate safely. In the spring and summer, bats colonize in attics in order to breed and rear their young. Damaged shingles, soffits, roof and gable vents, and fascia boards all create ease of access for bats looking to get into an attic.
Bat colonies damage structures mainly through contamination. Insulation, drywall, and valued possessions stored in the attic are all susceptible to guano build-up, and homes infested with bats often smell strongly of ammonia. Bat feces is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus that can aerate and cause the lung disease histoplasmosis. ABC Humane Wildlife Control & Prevention provides guano clean-up and safe attic insulation removal and replacement.
WARNING – All bat species are protected. For this reason, it is important to hire licensed professionals to address the problem. ABC Wildlife is dedicated to humane bat removal to ensure the safety of both the homeowner and the bat colony.
The Process of Bat Proofing
Bats only need a gap the size of a dime to enter a structure. Our humane exclusion process involves identifying and sealing those gaps to eliminate as many entry points as possible. We install devices called excluders that allow bats to exit, but not reenter the roosting area. Once all bats have been removed, we return to remove the excluders and seal the remaining entry point.
Because bats are protected and so valuable to our environment, we take special consideration for the time of year and manner in which they are removed. We will never seal animals into a structure. We take care to not exclude bats during birthing and rearing season or when weather is too severe for them to survive outside.
Health Concerns Related to Bats
Bats are the cause of a variety of illnesses that are hazardous to humans. While bats aren’t the top carrier of rabies in Illinois, they are the most likely to transmit it. Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease caused by spores that develop in bat guano. It attacks the respiratory system and can be particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Bats also carry lice, mites, fleas, and bat bugs, all of which are capable of transmitting diseases.
