Cockroach Identification

cockroach control removal illinoisThe incredible adaptability and durability of the cockroach has resulted in them being one of earth’s longest surviving creatures.  Certain species are able to survive for extended periods of time without air or nourishment, endure extreme climates, and even survive for a period without their heads.  They are one of the most prolific and common insect pests encountered in urban and suburban areas.

Cockroaches vary in size and appearance depending on species, though the types most common to Northern Illinois – American, German, oriental, and brown-banded – are black or brown in color and range in length from half an inch to just over two inches.  They have broad, flat bodies, small heads with antennae, and wings that are functional in some species and vestigial in others.  Both the American cockroach and the male brown-banded cockroach are capable of flight while German and oriental cockroaches are not.

Omnivorous scavengers, cockroaches will forage for whatever food source is available to them.  Most varieties prefer a diet of organic material, including fermented food and excrement, though they will subsist on any convenient material of nutritional value from envelope glue to nylon stockings.

Cockroach Habitat

The habitat of a cockroach often depends on the nutritional preference of the species.  Generally, they seek out warm, dark areas.  Varieties like the German, oriental, and American cockroach tend to harbor in areas with an ample supply of moisture like kitchens, bathrooms, basements, near water pipes, and in drains, while the brown-banded cockroach requires less hydration and is typically found in ceilings, furniture, and behind light switch plates.  Structures that have areas with an accumulation of garbage or debris are more likely to house these insects. Cockroaches can enter buildings via doors, through unscreened vents, sewers, through pipe and utility line openings, and stowed away in delivery boxes.  Migration into a building is often caused by flooding or an extreme drop in temperature.

Cockroach Damage and Health Concerns

If you suspect you may be dealing with a cockroach problem, it must be addressed immediately.  While cockroaches don’t cause structural damage, they can stain walls with their fecal matter as well as pose serious sanitation and health issues.  Cockroaches are carriers of disease, accumulating bacteria like salmonella on their legs which is then deposited into the food supply where they are scavenging.  They also emit malodorous secretions that alter the flavoring of food.  Anything edible that has been contaminated by a cockroach presence must be disposed of, which can lead to a huge loss of revenue for companies specializing in food service.  In addition to food-related health hazards, dust containing cockroach fecal matter and exoskeletons has been known to cause serious asthmatic reactions.

What They Say About ABC Humane Wildlife

I arranged for them to install wire screening on 2 sides of a concrete stoop to prevent animals from digging under my porch. (I have used this company in the past to remove animals from other parts of my property. They suggested this proactive work.) They called to remind me several days before their appointment. They came as promised. They did a great job of preserving landscaping gravel on the side before they dug. After digging down approximately 18 inches, they installed wire mesh screening down the 2 sides of the stoop. They then covered the area with the dirt and final layer of landscaping stones. You couldn’t even tell the area had been excavated when they were done!

We had bees crawling under exterior siding through a gap between siding and brick wall and wanted them eliminated. Phil the technician from ABC arrived at the scheduled time. He observed the bees and identified them as yellow jackets. Phil said he could eradicate them with a powder treatment and the bee activity would die down in a couple of days and we would be finished with the problem. Phil said if we still noticed bee activity after 7 days to call ABC and they would come back to re-treat the nest at no charge. It is just 3 days since Phil treated the nest and we have observed zero bee activity. We are very happy with the service and the remedy to our problem.

One by one, they removed a family of nine flying squirrels from our attic. The attic was completely cleaned and sanitized, and new insulation as blown in. All went well. It was easy to make appointments with ABC Humane Wildlife Control, and they were all very profession and prompt with their service. We dealt with many on their staff while trying to catch all the squirrels, and each of the representatives were friendly and helpful. We had some issues with the condition of some of the traps, but that was eventually resolved. They are a very helpful organization and the staff is very knowledgeable.
