Bed Bug Identification
Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed strictly on blood for survival. They are about 4 to 5 millimeters in length with a flat, broad, ridged exoskeleton: roughly the size and shape of a small apple seed. Adults are light brown and will exhibit a red abdomen immediately after feeding that then fades into a rusty brown color.
A bed bug infestation is usually indicated by the presence of bites. They will feed from their host at the easiest access point, which is most often the area where skin makes contact with the furniture surface. If the itchy welts on your body are on your torso, it’s likely to be a different insect since bed bug bites are typically incurred on the face, neck, or arms. In addition to bites, signs of a bed bug infestation include rust-colored stains, insect excrement, and shed exoskeletons along the edges of furniture seams.
Bed Bug Habitat
Bed bugs seek out areas where blood is readily available to them for an extended period of time. They get their name, because they favor harboring in the seams of mattresses, box springs, and the crevices of headboards or bedframes. Because humans remain stationary while they sleep, it allows the bed bug ample time to feed. They are also found in other areas of the home like couches and chairs as well as public venues such as taxis and busses, offices, and movie theaters. Bed bugs have been known to travel up to 100 feet in a night, though most remain within 8 feet of their food source. Once they have fed from their host, they return to their area of harborage and gather in clusters. Though they are able survive for several months without feeding, if a bed bug’s source of blood is removed, it will seek out a new nesting site by latching on to purses, bags, or clothing to travel to a different location.
Bed Bug Damage
Though bed bugs cause no structural damage, dealing with an infestation can be incredibly upsetting, causing loss of sleep and emotional distress for the victim. If you suspect you may have a bed bug problem, it must be addressed immediately to prevent the situation from escalating. Eliminating a heavy infestation can be challenging, and if a population is permitted to increase, it may lead to the necessary disposal of valuable or cherished furniture. The earlier the circumstances are addressed, the easier they will be to resolve.
Bed Bug Health Concerns
While bed bugs are not known carriers of disease, they do bite in order to procure blood for sustenance. Their bites may cause serious allergic reactions, producing itchy welts and rashes, the scratching of which can lead to scarring as well as secondary skin infections.
