Opossum Identification

ABC-Humane-Wildlife-OpossumThe only marsupial native to North America, opossums are roughly the size of a house cat. They are grey and white in color, have narrow, tapered heads and pointed, pink noses.  Both their front and hind feet of include five curled toes, and the inner toe on the hind foot is opposable, much like a thumb, allowing the animal to grab small branches.  Opossums range in size from 24 and 33 inches long and typically weigh between 6 and 15 pounds.

Opossums are nocturnal, meaning they venture out of their dens in the evening in search of food. They are very secretive, slow, and solitary.  Opossums are excellent climbers and will climb trees or hide in bushes when chased. When unable to reach safety, an opossum will lie down, close its eyes,  let its tongue hang out of its mouth, and excrete a very bad smelling substance. This behavior has become known as “playing possum” and is caused by nervousness, but the opossum usually recovers quickly and will seize the opportunity to make a clean getaway.

Opossum Habitat in Illinois

Opossums are common throughout the Midwestern and Eastern parts of the United States, including all of Illinois. Opossums have a large habitat radius and build multiple dens throughout the year. Most live near wooded areas with access to fresh water, but many have adapted to urban and suburban areas as well. They seek shelter in dens created by other animals, under sheds or buildings, rock piles, brush piles, culverts, and fallen logs.

Opossum Damage to Illinois Homes & Businesses

Opossums frequently burrow under structures near or around homes to create a den. They are found under decks, crawl spaces, front stoops, and sheds. They can also burrow under the side of your home, creating significant damage to the foundation and siding. Opossums can enter your home or business via small existing holes, and their claws and many teeth can damage siding and other structural elements.

Opossum Health Concerns Affecting Illinois Citizens

Opossums may seem mild and easy to deal with, but if you find an opossum living on your property, do not approach it. Contact an expert to assist with removing the animal safely. Opossums can carry rabies, fleas, and ticks (some of which are also carriers of disease). They are also known carriers of leptospirosis (hemorrhagic jaundice), which can cause brain inflammation, kidney damage, liver failure, and in extreme cases, death.

What They Say About ABC Humane Wildlife

I arranged for them to install wire screening on 2 sides of a concrete stoop to prevent animals from digging under my porch. (I have used this company in the past to remove animals from other parts of my property. They suggested this proactive work.) They called to remind me several days before their appointment. They came as promised. They did a great job of preserving landscaping gravel on the side before they dug. After digging down approximately 18 inches, they installed wire mesh screening down the 2 sides of the stoop. They then covered the area with the dirt and final layer of landscaping stones. You couldn’t even tell the area had been excavated when they were done!

We had bees crawling under exterior siding through a gap between siding and brick wall and wanted them eliminated. Phil the technician from ABC arrived at the scheduled time. He observed the bees and identified them as yellow jackets. Phil said he could eradicate them with a powder treatment and the bee activity would die down in a couple of days and we would be finished with the problem. Phil said if we still noticed bee activity after 7 days to call ABC and they would come back to re-treat the nest at no charge. It is just 3 days since Phil treated the nest and we have observed zero bee activity. We are very happy with the service and the remedy to our problem.

One by one, they removed a family of nine flying squirrels from our attic. The attic was completely cleaned and sanitized, and new insulation as blown in. All went well. It was easy to make appointments with ABC Humane Wildlife Control, and they were all very profession and prompt with their service. We dealt with many on their staff while trying to catch all the squirrels, and each of the representatives were friendly and helpful. We had some issues with the condition of some of the traps, but that was eventually resolved. They are a very helpful organization and the staff is very knowledgeable.
