North America’s only known marsupials, Opossums are roughly the size and shape of a house cat, but with shorter legs. They are grey and white in color. Opossums range in size from 24 and 33 inches long and typically weigh between 6 and 15 pounds. The Opossum has a narrow, tapered head and pointed, pink nose. Both the front and hind feet of include five curled toes and the inner toe on each foot is clawless and acts very much like an opposable thumb, allowing the animal to grab small branches.
They are nocturnal by nature and venture out of their dens in the evening in search for food. They are very secretive animals, slow and solitary. When chased, opossums will climb trees or hide in bushes or brush in search of safety. Known for “playing possum,” when under threat and unable to reach safety, an opossum will lie down, close its eyes and let its tongue hang out of its mouth, and excrete a very bad smelling substance. This reaction is caused by nervousness, but the opossum recovers quickly and will seize the opportunity to make a clean getaway.
Opossums are common throughout the Midwestern and Eastern most of the U.S., including all of Illinois. Opossums range widely and build multiple dens throughout the year. Most live near wooded areas with access to fresh water; but many have adapted to urban and suburban areas as well. They seek shelter in dens created by other animals, under sheds or buildings, rock piles, brush piles, culverts and fallen logs.
For 35 years, ABC Wildlife has helped homeowners across Chicagoland deal with opossum problems, including:
- Arlington Heights
- Oak Brook
- Glen Ellyn
- Lake Forest
- Highland Park
- St. Charles
- Elmhurst, and more
Opossums frequently burrow under structures near or around homes to create a den. They are found under decks, crawl spaces, front stoops and sheds. They can also burrow under the side of your home, creating significant damage to the foundation and siding. Opossums can enter your home or business via small existing holes and their claws and many teeth can damage siding, and other structural elements of your home or business.
Opossums typically create dens under porches throughout the year to nest and raise their young. They often can cause damage to concrete structures by digging underneath them. This can create subsidence which can degrade concrete structures.
Opossum Health Concerns
Opossums may seem mild and easy to deal with, but if you find an opossum living on your property do not approach it. Contact an expert to assist with removing the animal safely. Opossums can carry rabies, fleas and ticks (some of which are also carriers of disease). Opossums are also known carriers of leptospirosis (hemorrhagic jaundice), which can cause brain inflammation, kidney damage, liver failure and in extreme cases, death.
