Chipmunks (sometimes also called ground squirrels) are relatively easy to identify thanks to their small size and typical markings. The eastern chipmunk and the thirteen-lined ground squirrel are native throughout Illinois. The eastern chipmunk is approximately 8-12 inches in total length and between 3-5 ounces in weight. The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is much larger and weighs in around 9 ounces, is slender with large eyes and small ears.
Both eastern chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels are burrowing rodents who love to dig underground tunnels and nests. They are omnivores who eat a variety of food including seeds, nuts, roots, fungi, grass, shoots, worms and bird eggs. They are also quite fond of vegetable, flower bulbs, flower buds and plant gardens, doing significant damage when not properly controlled.
Chipmunks are common throughout all of the U.S., including Northern Illinois. Chipmunks are fond of woodlands and fields near woods, but are also frequently found in suburban and rural neighborhoods. Chipmunks will invade property by burrowing under structures and other well protected areas. Both eastern chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels hibernate during winter after digging a burrow in late autumn.
For 35 years, ABC Wildlife has helped homeowners across Chicagoland deal with chipmunk problems, including:
- Arlington Heights
- Oak Brook
- Glen Ellyn
- Lake Forest
- Highland Park
- St. Charles
- Elmhurst, and more
In urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods, chipmunks often cause significant damage to manicured lawns, to vegetable and flower gardens and to other landscaped areas nearby homes and businesses. Their digging habits create significant issues that are difficult to properly treat. If you are experiencing an issue with chipmunks or ground squirrels in your home or business, chances are that they have already established more than one point of entry. Burrow entrances are typically smaller than three inches in diameter, and are about the size of a golf ball.
When chipmunks are present in larger numbers, they can create significant damage by burrowing under stairs, patios, driveways, foundations or retaining walls. This digging can cause the ground to subside, damaging the concrete structure. Ignoring a chipmunk problem has the potential to create significant issues for most home and business owners. It is important to act quickly once a chipmunk problem is identified.
Chipmunk Health Concerns
Chipmunks do not present any significant health or safety concerns for humans or pets. Nevertheless, it is recommended you stay away from all wild animals to prevent potential issues from arising.
